Der junge Wissenschaftler Will Rodman (James Franco, "127 Hours") forscht an einem Heilmittel gegen die tückische Alzheimer-Krankheit. Als eine vielversprechende Testreihe an Affen tragisch endet, werden die Versuchstiere getötet und das Projekt eingestellt. Nur das Schimpansenbaby Caesar überlebt und wird von Will gerettet und aufgezogen. Im Laufe der Jahre entwickelt Caesar eine übermenschliche Intelligenz, die auf seine Umwelt jedoch zunehmend bedrohlich wirkt. Als Will gezwungen wird, ihn in einem Affengehege abzugeben, bricht für Caesar eine Welt zusammen. Doch es gelingt ihm, sich und die anderen Affen zu befreien: Der Aufstand beginnt!
