Bereits die erste Single der Sex Pistols, "Anarchy in the U.K.", verfehlte nicht ihre Wirkung. Englische Radiostationen verweigerten die Ausstrahlung, denn der provozierende Text sollte kein Gehör finden. Doch das Beinahe-Verbot erhöhte nur den Bekanntheitsgrad der Punkband. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt gab es die Sex Pistols bereits drei Jahre, ihr neuer treibender Rock hatte sich längst herumgesprochen und die Punkwelle losgetreten. Bereits mit der zweiten Single attackierten die Sex Pistols die Mutter Englands mit ihrer Version von "God Save the Queen".
