Tamron's SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II VC LD Aspherical [IF] (Model B005) is a high speed f/2.8 wide-to-moderate-telephoto zoom lens designed exclusively for Canon and Nikon-mount digital SLR cameras with smaller sensors and now features Tamron's proprietary tri-axial Vibration Compensation (VC) mechanism that minimizes the effects of handheld camera shake. This SP 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II VC covers the very popular 17-50mm focal length range (equivalent to 26-78mm in the full-frame 35mm format) making it extremely versatile. Its wide aperture and outstanding performance provide practical advantages in low-light shooting and aesthetic image control, thereby enriching the user's range of creative expression. This lens delivers impressive sharpness and striking contrast over its entire focal-length and aperture range, and at its maximum aperture of f/2.8 it produces beautiful images enhanced by shallow depth of- field, and smooth, natural transitions in out-of-focus areas of the image (i.e. excellent bokeh.) This lens is equipped with Tamron's proprietary Vibration Compensation (VC) image stabilization mechanism, which controls the effects of camera shake in three planes. VC provides more opportunities for sharp hand-held photography (up to 4-stops) at the slow shutter speeds needed when shooting in low-light conditions (e.g. night or indoor scenes) dramatically enhancing the user's level of photographic freedom.

  • Really working image stabilizer, High quality pictures, Sharp
  • Chromatic abberations, Noisy autofocus, Slow autofocus in dark
Quality of pictures is excellent! But you will see chromatic abberations, bokeh is not accurate. Image stabilizer works good! Autofocus is noisy, slow in the dark. Lens are good for wedding photography, portraits. Fazit: Worth to buy!

  • Good color rendering, Aperture 2.8 and stabilizer - it´s just something
  • Heavy enough
I use this lens on the Nikon D90. A very decent sharpness at f/4 and above. Including the edges of the frame. With the tamron stabilization system (VC) has dealt for the first time, so I can only compare with the Nikon (VR). The difference is not feel particularly. Fazit: I am satisfied with this lens. For everyday shooting is ideal. The stabilizer in conjunction with the aperture substantially embellish your life and fill it with masterpieces.

  • High quality of pictures, High quality of the assembly
  • Strongly the stabilizator rustles
Bought on changeover of the regular. While used it is not enough. There are only first impressions. It is well collected, heavy, the stabilizator works. Fazit: I use as regular on Canon 550D.

  • Robust, close focus better than Sigma
  • Chromatic Abberation in High contrast shots, noisy autofocus, slow and ´wobbly´ VC (although effective)
Well built with a weight that is heavy enough to aff stability but not too heavy.
Autofocus noise is rather unpleasant especially in quiet places.
VC is effective but also makes a clacking noise and the viewfinder image shakes until it stabilises so it is rather slow. Fazit: I wanted it for concert photography. This was a bad choice as the focus is noisy and I found that the lighting caused a high level of Chromatic Abberation (magenta fringinging) in high contrast areas.

For general purpose use in low light it delivers results as good as those by my Sigma 18-50 2.8 but for high contrast pictures or quiet locations I would not recommend this lens. If you can live without VC there are better alternatives.
